One Hundred Rules for Surviving Corzana by Daniel W. Koch
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Great world building.
This is a portal fantasy. Adam is a 13 yrs old downtrodden orphan who gets a lucky break when he receives a package that leads him to another world. This world has monsters, royalty, and mostly good friendly people. As with most middle grade fantasy books, Adam (the MC) makes several stupid rash choices which should have grave consequences, but turn around to work in his favor, and he ends up a hero. But this is juvenile fiction, so I’ll make an allowance for that.
It’s a kind of Harry Potter-y book. – The young orphan discovering a magic world… Of course, the book is unique, and beyond that cliche, is completely different. But if you’re an HP fan, you’d likely enjoy this too.
The creatures and world building were nice and original ideas. There were also some great friendships. It was a highly enjoyable read. I definitely recommend it for middle grade fantasy readers.
