Born At Dawn

Author: Christina Davis

Series: Da’Valia Trilogy #1

My Rating: 4.4 out of 5 stars

Growing up among her human side of her family, Neva always had to blend in and hide her non-human abilities, which she could only use in secret on her thieving jobs. When an object she’s hired to steal accidentally releases a protective spell blocking her powers, Nevada must seek out her mother’s people to learn to control and use her new powers.

This was a coming-into-her-powers, figuring-out-her-future, type of plot, with lots of magic, fighting, and family secrets mixed in. The magic and fighting scenes were often high stakes and drew me into the story. Neva is 17, but she acts more like a twenty year old adult and not an angsty teen, which I appreciated since these plots don’t always have a mature lead character.

The book was well written. I finished it in a single day and stayed up much later than I should have.

Neva had a comfortable life with her human father’s side of her family, but she had to leave it all behind. Her mother’s people, the De’Valia, are all warriors who have magical abilities. While Neva can finally stop hiding her abilities and unusual looks, she doesn’t fit in with the full blooded De’Valia either. Half of both worlds, Neva needs to choose which way of life she wants to live before the choice is taken away from her.
