Knightmare Arcanist

Frith Chronicles #1

by Shami Stovall

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fascinating world full of numerous magical creatures.

Bonding with a magical creature strengthens that creature’s magic, and grants its human partner magical abilities as well. Who wouldn’t want to be an arcanist? Only, magical creatures aren’t exactly plentiful, nor are they handed out to kids who aren’t rich and who work as grave diggers. But Volke & Illia won’t let stupid rules like that stop them.

Magical animal companions – I’d kill to have one. There were a lot of different creatures introduced here, and they each had very unique magical skills. I wish more time was spent on Volke’s and Luthair’s relationship, getting to know each other better and all that, but I enjoyed it enough the way it was. The shadow magic was really cool and powerful, and I liked that it didn’t come easily for Volke.

Surprisingly, I liked the bully character most here. He ended up having more depth than I expected. The other characters also gave a good show, and left lots of room for further growth in future books. I didn’t connect well to any one particular character though. They all felt too ambitious and weren’t sympathetic enough in a way that I could relate to.

I really liked the many different magical beings and abilities. The conflict was resolved in this book, but I’m looking forward to reading their next adventure.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
